Rape by definition
A male sexual intercourse with a female by mean of the insertion of penis into the female vagina without her consent. Youths under the age of 14 years by law are deemed incapable of committing rape.

What does statistic says?
The latest crime statistic release by Polis Di-Raja Malaysia (PDRM) website reported that the rape cases in our country has doubled from 1,210 cases in Year 2000 to 2,435 cases in Year 2006. While this paint a very grim and disturbing picture of the increasing crime index trend involving rape, the number reported is only part of a bigger and darker reality. Many cases goes unreported as most rape victims are frightened of going through the process of medical examinations, police interrogations and court proceedings while fighting the post-trauma, suffering silencely with a mixture of anger, hurt, anxiety, shame or even guilt. It is suffice to say that only 1 out of every 10 cases of rape are reported to the authority while the remaining goes on to live their life, trying hard to put behind the crime unto them, one that is never their fault.

Rape in the News
I’ve compiled a list of rape related cases – omitting those of sodomy, where it is not considered a rape but categorized as Buggery – Gross Indecency:

The latest rape case that took place in Johor – where the perpetrators operate in a group of 4 from their vehicle, looking for random victim at night which they chase to secluded place before driving them off to rape the female with the male friend looks on helplessly; have our police force working up their sleeves to solve this case. It is reported today that police believed the crime were carried out by ex-gang member linked to the Sagol Gang. I can only hope that the culprit will be caught and put behind bars to the maximum sentence.

What can woman do?
Heed the advice of basic security cautions to avoid been victimized such as walking in bright area, carrying pepper spray and , informing your friends/family of your whereabouts, avoiding going out late at night, taking care of your drinks while in clubs and press your car lock remote only upon arriving at the door and lock your car once inside. This may sounds easy but it is the least you can do to avoid such incident from happening.

On another note
Fiesta Feminista is happening this weekend in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. The two-and-a-half day event aimed at recognizing the rich diversity of women’s identities and lives, discussing various topic through their workshops, exhibitions, short film screenings, etc.

Uncommon magic at 21:45 hour: Taking a serious look at rape issue, reading various journals and reports in an attempt understand rape and rape victimology.
